The main difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org is that the .com version is hosted by WordPress specifically, and the .org version is downloaded and installed on our network. From the standpoint of our clients, it may seem like little to no difference in the two, especially since they are not managing this side of their website anyway. However, a key detail to keep in mind is the level of control we have over your website. Meaning, if we are not installing the software on our own network, there could be some significant limitations in what we can do “under the hood” of the site.
This is why when developing customized websites, we tend to use the downloaded developer’s version as it gives us a great deal of flexibility and control, allowing us to deliver the customized features our clients rely on. In this case, we also select and tweak the best server environment for each website, and we handle server maintenance and security.
Having said that, clients who wish to base their website on the WordPress infrastructure do not always require that level of website development. Ultimately, the best version of WordPress for you depends on your needs and preferences – all of which are taken into consideration during our website development consultation.

Assuming you are here to learn about the differences between the two because you plan to do this yourself, then the following information may be more useful to you. Again, the main difference between the hosted version of WordPress and the downloadable version that is installed on your own server is that with the hosted version, you don’t have to worry about hosting, security, or maintenance. WordPress will take care of all of that for you. However, you will have less control over your website and you may have to pay monthly fees.
With the downloadable version, you have complete control over your website. You can choose your own hosting provider, install your own security software, and make any changes you want to the code. However, you will be responsible for all of the maintenance and security updates. In the end, if you want a hassle-free solution, then the hosted version may be a good option. However, if you want more control over your website, then the self-hosted version may be a better choice.
